UCP Wheels for Humanity began as "Wheels for Humanity" in a Studio City garage in 1995. That year Wheels delivered 130 wheelchairs to people in Guatemala. UCP Wheels for Humanity organization grew and in February 1996, we incorporated into a 501 (c) 3 non-profit. We now operate from a 10,880-square-foot warehouse in North Hollywood, California. And we've continued to grow.
UCP Wheels for Humanity staff and volunteers have created an atmosphere of warmth and compassion where our mission to provide increased self-sufficiency, mobility and education to people with disabilities throughout the world is accomplished every day.
For the employees that call UCP Wheels "home" and the volunteers that generously donate their time and talents, they are excited and driven by their mission of providing mobility, dignity and opportunity to people with disabilities in developing countries.
UCP Wheels for Humanity vibrant volunteer program that draws, among others, retired seniors, volunteers from Easter Seals, youth volunteers from local high schools for the disabled, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, and at-risk youth fulfilling community service hours, make UCP Wheels for Humanity mission possible.
During each wheelchair distribution and seating clinic, a team of volunteer medical professionals work with our partners in developing countries to individually custom-fit wheelchairs and other ambulatory equipment - without regard to political affiliation, religious belief or ethnic identity.
UCP Wheels helps thousands of children and adults with disabilities each year gain increased mobility and dignity, traveling to developing countries such as Mexico, Vietnam, Uganda, Costa Rica, Nicaragua, Brazil, Mongolia, Thailand, Ukraine and Zimbabwe.
Volunteer drivers work throughout California picking up wheelchairs and other ambulatory equipment. Depending on your location volunteers can usually pick-up wheelchairs within 10 business days from the original request. UCP Wheels also utilizes the generosity of FedEx Freight West to make large pick-ups of wheelchairs throughout Western US. If you would like to donate a wheelchair and you are outside of Western US, please look at our resource page to find alternative options.
